Jewel Awards Honor Citywide
Servants
The Columbus alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Incorporated, the nation’s oldest historically Black Greek-letter
organization, with the support of the Call and Post News, will honor
individuals for their transformation acts of leadership and service
to the central Ohio community. The Community Achievement Luncheon:
Recognizing Transformational Acts of Leadership in the Community
will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. The
luncheon is intended to publicly acknowledge, embrace, and encourage
transformative acts of leadership and service, and to tell the
positive stories of African Americans’ contributions to the Central
Ohio Community.
“These are individuals who, like jewels, are hard in their
commitment to community action, and yet their actions have an
aesthetic quality that enables them to stand out in the eyes of
others,” said Dr. Christopher Washington, an Alpha member who chairs
the award recipient selection committee.
To determine the 2008 recipients, Washington has assembled a notable
committee of Columbus community servants. “Who better to select
awards recipients than individuals who have given of themselves in
service to others,” said Washington. The selection committee
includes: Kevin Boyce, Terry Boyd, Lisa Chambers, Todd Corley,
Oyauma Garrison, Shawna Gibbs, Darwin Hollingsworth, Tim Horton,
Cecil Jones, Dawn Tyler Lee, Janelle Simmons, Tei Street, and Adam
Troy.
Up to seven awards will be given in the following areas:
• Leadership in Health/Wellness/Medicine
• Leadership in Education
• Outstanding Social and Community Service
• Leadership in Business/Enterprise
• Thought Leadership in Arts/Performing
Arts/Humanities
• Outstanding Service in
Legal/Governmental/Statesmanship
• Technology Leadership and its Application
The $35-per-plate luncheon will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Villa
Milano, 1630 Schrock Road. Proceeds from the event will fund grants
for award recipients and fund academic scholarships administered by
the Alpha Rho Lambda Education Foundation.
If you or your organization is interested in nominating an
individual for the award, sponsoring an award category, or
purchasing tickets to the event, please contact Christopher
Washington at
