"Give up the pounds, not the fight!"

The National Black MBA Association - Columbus Chapter has joined The 50 Million Pound Challenge! The initiative was rolled out during the 4th Quarter Membership Meeting at State Farm Insurance.

Come and Join Us:

   1.  Visit the website www.50millionpounds.com
   2.  Register for the challenge
   3.  Join the NBMBAA - Columbus OH Chapter's Team
   4.  Start living a healthier life!

The Columbus Chapter's goal is to register 50 people and to lose 250 pounds collectively. The biggest loser (% basis) will win a 1 year membership to the NBMBAA - $125 value.

The winner will be announced at our 1st Quarter meeting scheduled for Feb. 21, 2008 at The Ohio State University.

The Fifty Million Pound Challenge is an initiative for African Americans to reverse the overweight trend and the related health problems that plague our community. This challenge is being led by Dr. Ian Smith and sponsored by State Farm. Dr. Smith is currently the medical/diet expert on VH1’s highly-rated “Celebrity Fit Club,” host of “Meet the Faith” on BET, a medical contributor to ABC’s nationally syndicated, “The View”, and a contributing editor to Men’s Health magazine. He has written for various publications including Time, Newsweek, and the New York Daily News, and has been featured in several other publications including, People, Essence, Ebony, Cosmopolitan, and University of Chicago Medicine on the Midway.

The goal of the program is for individuals to make a personal commitment to reduce their weight, eat healthier and add exercise to their regimen. The challenge is being taken up by many organizations including the NBMBAA. Our involvement with the challenge began with our President and CEO, Barbara Thomas, joining the kickoff event in Washington DC. This initiative supports the lifestyle leg of our five channels. It makes sense that healthier individuals will lead more productive lives, and they will pass those healthy habits on to the next generation of Black Americans.

Joining the challenge is simple. Go to our website at www.nbmbaa.org, click on the ‘lifestyle’ section and linking through to the 50 million pound website. Read about Dr. Smith and his commitment to our community to increase our level of health. Sign up in the ‘Your Health Tracker’ section and simply record your starting weight and desired goal weight. Also check Dr. Smith’s tips for diet and exercise. Come back frequently and record your subsequent weight loss. You can get a free challenge kit at participating State Farm agents. You can find the agent closest to you on the website by entering your zip code. By following Dr. Smith’s suggestions and monitoring your progress you can quickly reach your stated goal.

In any case, we hope you will join us in the 50 Million Pound challenge. Think how great it will be to showcase the new, slimmer you at this year’s conference! We intend to make this a chapter contest, so stay alert for the details in our next message in early July. For questions please contact the Membership department at 312-580-8291. Here’s to a healthier NBMBAA membership.
